Teferi Alemu built his washing station in 2008 amongst 486 small farms within the Oromia region of the Guji zone in Ethiopia. Teferi himself also owns 12 hectares of coffee land himself.
As cherries begin to ripen in October, farmers and their family begin picking and transporting their cherries to Teferi's washing station where the cherries will be accepted or rejected and sorted for quality. The farms around Oromia are small, also called smallholder or garden farms. The sizes range from .5 to 2 hectares, though some are as large as 10 hectares. The average yield of each farm is around 2 to 4 bags a year.
The Teferi Alemu washing station is one of the larger washing stations in the area filling more than 20 shipping containers a year with coffee ready for roasting. Both natural and washed coffees are produced at the station and 80% are specialty grade.
