Nemba is a washing station located on a small hill of Vyoga. This area is one of many in Burundi that contains remarkably fertile earth which has seen this region become rather well-known for the growth of pumpkins. The washing station was actually built out of necessity by the people of the three communes surrounding where it now stands; Matongo, Muruta, and Kayanza which is where this particular coffee originates.

All coffee trees in Burundi are Red Bourbon, which is tightly controlled by the government for reasons of quality. Despite the ubiquity of coffee growing in Burundi, each smallholder producers a relatively small harvest. The average smallholder has approximately 250 trees, normally in their backyards. Each tree yields an average of 1.5 kilos of cherry so the average producer sells about 200-300 kilos of cherry annually.

Though approximately 70% of coffee in Burundi is fully washed, this coffee has been processed naturally. This mean it was left to dry on raised beds with the fruit still intact which imparts the fruits flavors into the beans.
